CD PROJEKT RED has dropped a stunning 6-minute cinematic trailer for The Witcher IV debuting Ciri as the next game’s main character. It has long been suspected by fans that Ciri might take the lead role for the next installment of the immensely popular franchise given the amount of character development that occurred in the last game. Geralt’s ward was prominently featured throughout much of The Witcher 3 with background stories ranging from childhood up to becoming a young adult monster slayer that included a number of solo missions. Some began to wonder if she might make a cameo in Cyberpunk 2044 after sharing interesting details with Geralt about her dimension-jumping adventures to a strange place, but it seems that is not to be.

CD PROJEKT RED revealed early on that it would not be using its in-house RED engine for the fourth installment, which has gone by the codename Polaris, and instead would switch over to Unreal Engine 5. The new cinematic trailer provides the first glimpse of what the development team has accomplished and was created with assistance from @PlatigeImage_studio‬.

Description (via press release):

“The Witcher IV is an upcoming single-player open-world role-playing game from CD PROJEKT RED and the next mainline entry in The Witcher series of games, following the critically acclaimed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. At the beginning of a new saga, players take on the role of Ciri, a professional monster slayer, and embark on a journey through a brutal dark-fantasy world. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, and developed in-house by CD PROJEKT RED, it aims to be the most immersive and ambitious open-world Witcher game to date.”

No release date has been revealed for The Witcher 4 and it is believed to still be a number of years out but it was recently said that the development team is now fully staffed and the title is in full production. The next game is also said to be the start of a new trilogy as well but it’s still not known if Geralt, or any other Witchers seen in the first trilogy, will make an appearance. One other detail regarding the new trailer, which was revealed at The Game Awards 2024, is that it was rendered using a yet unannounced NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU, with CES 2025 right around the corner it’s already rumored that CEO Jensen Huang could be planning something tied to the game and the RTX 50 series launch.
