Capcom has announced Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the first new franchise entry since 2006’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. The first Onimusha game debuted in 2001, depicting feudal Japan and inspired by real historical events but with a supernatural twist and featuring the “Issen” swordfight mechanic allowing players to block and counterattack. This next installment is said to take place during the early Edo period whereas the Sengoku period was primarily explored in previous games.
“Onimusha series tells the story of a young warrior during a time of widespread war in feudal Japan. Acquiring the power of the Oni, he becomes an Onimusha and battles against the evil Genma that are attempting to conquer of the world.”
New series installments for the action-adventure franchise were released throughout the 2000s, and then, a remastered version of the first game arrived in 2018 for consoles followed by a version for PC in 2019, that updated the franchise for modern gamers. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to arrive for PC via Steam and Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 in 2026.

“Fight through bloodbaths of intense swordplay action. Explore the historic Japanese capital of Edo-era Kyoto, twisted by malevolent clouds of Malice. With every stage cloaked in mystery, danger and intrigue. Battle against monstrosities from the underworld known as Genma in a tale of dark fantasy. Follow the tale of a samurai who wields the Oni Gauntlet, a mystical artifact that grants its bearer the power to slay Genma. Through gritty, blood-soaked brawls, he searches for his reason to fight. What fate awaits at the end of his path?”
Capcom further adds that players will experience the dilemma of their character who questions whether or not to keep fighting among ongoing bloodshed while feeling the “rush of battle”.
